How to properly set up iPhone backup in iCloud

0

It is simply impossible to imagine an iPhone without iCloud backup in 2023. This feature appeared back in 2011 with the release of iOS 5 and has become familiar to any iPhone owner. Since then, the free 5 GB storage has remained unchanged. Agree that this is a very small volume, and it is almost impossible to store all the necessary data in it. But if you correctly approach setting up an iCloud backup, then you can even fit into this small volume.

Yes, the data contained in the iCloud backup can be very flexibly configured and due to this, meet almost any limit. Unfortunately, not all users know how to do this. In this article, we will tell you how to correctly set up an iPhone backup in iCloud.

How to backup iPhone

If we talk about setting up iCloud , then first of all you need to decide what you want to achieve from the backup. For those who pay one of the big paid plans in iCloud for 200 GB or 2 TB, there should not be a problem with the occupied space, and there is not much point in getting into the settings. But for those who use 50 GB or even 5 GB of free space, you should think about what data is stored in the cloud. Backups and photos eat up the most memory. When I was an active iPhone user and stored my entire photo and video library in iCloud from the very first smartphone from Apple , and this is from 2011 to 2021, I fit into the 50 GB limit with great difficulty.

I had to be very flexible in setting up the data that the smartphone sent to the cloud, since I didn’t want to pay for storage anymore. Therefore, if you do not know how you can customize the contents of the iCloud backup , then this is done as follows:

  • Open settings on iPhone;
  • Click on your Apple ID at the top of the screen;
  • Select the iCloud section;
  • Click on “iCloud Backup” and select your iPhone backup;

  • Wait until all its components are loaded. It may take a couple of minutes and click “Show all applications”;
  • To reduce the backup size, disable all applications from which there is no point in backing up data. For example, these are various online stores and food delivery services. They store data on their own servers, so saving it to the cloud is definitely not worth it.

Thus, by successively disabling applications that make no sense for backup, you can significantly reduce the size of the backup. I advise you to stop copying various banking applications. They take up a lot of space, but there is no sense from this as such. Estimate also how much memory the Yandex Disk backup takes . As many as 352 megabytes. And this is provided that I launched the application twice. That is, the cache created during these two times clogs free memory in one fell swoop. I definitely don’t see any point in making a copy of Yandex Disk , because it’s already a cloud. Therefore, feel free to disable such services.

As a result, the biggest consumer of space in iCloud will remain your Media Library with photos and videos. To fit into the 5 GB limit, you will probably have to turn it off too. But I would advise you to expand iCloud to 50GB and enable iCloud Music Library . Firstly, it will cost you only 59 rubles per month, which is not so expensive, and secondly, all your photos will be available to you from any place where there is Internet, from any device and will not take up space in the backup. When you activate your library, photos and videos are allocated separate space in the cloud, and they become available in the Photos app in iCloud on the web :

  • Open the settings on your iPhone and click on your Apple ID at the very top of the page;
  • Select the iCloud section;
  • In the “Applications that use iCloud” section, click on “Photos”;
  • Turn on the “Sync this iPhone” toggle.

After that, you will see how the photos disappear from the backup and start syncing separately from it.

But that’s not all the tweaks you can make to optimize your iCloud storage . Many applications that take up space don’t really need it at all. For example, this applies to the Telegram messenger. It works quite calmly at the expense of its own servers, and it makes no sense to allocate access to iCloud to it. I use one account on iPhone, iPad, Windows and Android. And, of course, synchronization between them does not occur through iCloud. Therefore, unnecessary applications should definitely be turned off:

  • Open settings on iPhone and go to your Apple ID;
  • Select the iCloud section and in the “Applications that use iCloud” section, click on “All”;
  • Disable any apps for which you don’t need data sync. In my case, these are Promotions, Home, Wallet, Siri, Dictaphone, Watch, SberMarke, OK, Baby’s Diary, Taxes FL, Dropbox, Telegram, Wildberries, UDS.

As you can see, the list is impressive. But nothing superfluous climbs into the cloud and does not take up precious space there.but I won’t be surprised that sooner or later this will happen. Therefore, it is better to know right away how you can free up space in order to fit exactly into all the limits.
