Apple Introduces MagSafe Wireless Charger for iPhone

0

Remember AirPower? Well, the same wireless charging station that Apple introduced three years ago, but never released, announcing that the new product did not meet the company’s high standards. To say that Cupertino disappointed their fans by that act is to say nothing. After all, never before has Apple allowed itself to first give its word to release a product, and then take it back. However, this year the company still found a way to revive the wireless charging project, which, however, has nothing to do with AirPower.

The new charger that Apple introduced can be considered wireless in the understanding of most users. That is, it does not connect to a smartphone through a connector like the usual solutions that use a power supply and a cable for charging, through which energy is delivered to the battery, but is attached to the back cover using built-in magnets in the charger case and iPhone 12. That is why it got the name MagSafe is a tribute to the famous magnetic fastening system, first introduced in MacBook laptops, and then safely disappeared from there.

Fast wireless charging for iPhone

The uniqueness of the MagSafe charging is not only in the fact that it automatically attaches to the desired area on the back cover of the iPhone, eliminating accidental movement, but also in the high charging speed. With 15W of power, iPhone 12 fills up the battery noticeably faster than classic wireless chargers. The fact is that even if you put the most productive station under the iPhone, due to hardware limitations, it will not be able to charge at a power exceeding 7.5 watts. And with MagSafe, it can.

Which iPhones support MagSafe

But that is not all. Despite the fact that MagSafe charging can only reach its full potential when used with iPhone 12s, which are equipped with a special magnetic ring in the back cover, it can also be used with other devices as a regular wireless station, and the magnets in the iPhone 12 case are used for fastening external accessories.

This is the official list of MagSafe compatible devices available on Apple’s official website:

  • iPhone 12 mini / iPhone 12 / iPhone 12 Pro / iPhone 12 Pro Max
  • iPhone 11 / iPhone 11 Pro / iPhone 11 Pro Max
  • iPhone XR / iPhone XS / iPhone XS Max
  • iPhone X
  • iPhone 8/8 Plus
  • iPhone SE 2020

I specifically use the word “devices” and not “smartphones” because MagSafe can also recharge AirPods. The only requirement is to use a wireless charging case. If you have AirPods Pro, then you have it in the kit anyway, but owners of AirPods of the first and second generations, who decided to save money and at the time bought the cheapest version, will have to additionally purchase a Qi-compatible case.
